Mayotte is a French Overseas Department located in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. Mayotte’s area is 374 square kilometres. There is a very low threat from terrorism and virtually no crime. Everyone living there permanently is a French citizen.

There is currently a globally heightened threat of terror. Although this is not specific to Mayotte all travellers should keep this threat in mind. Foreign nationals from western countries should maintain an extra level of vigilance, as they are thought to be high priority targets.

As Mayotte is region of France, its international relations holds similar ties with the country. France is a founding member of the United Nations, of NATO, and of the European Coal and Steel Community. It further enjoys strong diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and the United States.
Travel Considerations
The cyclone season in Mayotte normally runs from December to April and this can sometimes affect the road conditions. You can drive in Mayotte with most UK, US and EU national driving licences. Roads are well maintained and the standard of driving is relatively high.

Visa requirements
All travellers will need a passport valid for at least 90 days following your departure date from Mayotte. Travellers from the UK, US, Australia, and the EU do not require a passport for Mayotte if they are visiting for tourist purposes.
Immunisations
It is advised that visitors to Mayotte are up-to-date with primary boosters such as MMR. It is recommended for most travellers to also get a Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations.
Although there is no risk of the disease in Mayotte, If you are coming from a country where there is a risk of Yellow Fever, or transiting for longer than 12 hours in an at risk country, you will have to provide a certificate of Yellow Fever vaccination. Check with your local health professional prior to travel if you are unsure.
Other health risks
Medical facilities are generally good quality. There is no risk of malaria in Mayotte.
